Our European project SUSTAvianFEED has made available online all its scientific publications, official deliverables and KERs, the result of years of research and pilot trials dedicated to promoting a more sustainable, ethical, and competitive poultry feeding system.
Thanks to the project results, it is now possible to access materials that demonstrate how the use of alternative feed ingredients, insects, and agricultural byproducts can:
- reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 36%,
- improve animal welfare,
- ensure economic profitability for farmers,
- promote a circular economy model within the poultry sector.
All documents are available in the dedicated section SUSTAvianFEED Deliverables, Scientific Publications and KERs.
Through extensive research and pilot trials, the SUSTAvianFEED project has identified practical solutions that can significantly enhance animal welfare, reduce environmental impact, and support the long-term sustainability and profitability of the poultry industry. Below, we highlight the key results of the project, along with the corresponding documents and deliverables.
Key Exploitable Results (KERs)
KER1 – Alternative feed ingredients and byproducts
Identification of fava beans, rapeseed meal, and triticale as sustainable substitutes for soybean meal. Pilot studies confirmed at least 10% environmental impact reduction.
Related deliverables:
KER2 – Profitability of alternative diets
New isoenergetic and isoproteic formulations guarantee sustainability without compromising profitability.
Related deliverable:
KER3 – Insects as a sustainable ingredient
Hermetia illucens larvae were introduced as a high-protein, eco-friendly source with balanced amino acids, beneficial fatty acids, and reduced CO₂ emissions.
Related deliverables:
KER4 – Slow-growing breeds
Promotion of slow-growing poultry breeds: higher meat quality, improved animal welfare, and lower environmental footprint.
Related deliverables:
- D3.3 – Evaluation of welfare and health indicators of chickens
- D3.4 – Product quality and performance traits of chickens fed sustainable diets
- D3.7 – Evaluation of the social aspects of the project
KER5 – Insects in slow-growing breeds
Up to 36% reduction of CO₂ per kg live weight with insect-based diets, while growth performance and meat quality remained unaffected.
Related deliverable:
KER6 – Insects in broilers
Trials with Cobb and Anadolu-T broilers showed that insect-based diets reduced CO₂ emissions significantly while maintaining production efficiency.
Related deliverable:
KER7 – Low- and medium-tech insect production schemes
Scalable models of insect farming, adaptable to both low-tech farms and advanced facilities. Medium-tech systems showed the highest sustainability gains.
Related document:
KER8 – Guidelines for farmers
Practical leaflets (in English and Spanish) to support smallholders in adopting project-based sustainable solutions.
Related document:
KER9 – Circular Economy Business Model
A Circular Economy Business Model (CEBM) designed to make poultry production sustainable, resilient, and resource-efficient.
